I have a 1230 machine that my daughter wants to use. She is starting her sewing and I have purchased an 830. The 1230 will not turn on. The repairs will be at least $350.00. Do you knowledgeable ladies think it is worth the money to repair??

Thank you

Suz

Yes! I would spend that much to repair mine if it had this issue.

hello;

I am not a lady so may I answer anyway? ;-)

I personally would repair it. Keep it out of the scrap yard or landfill. If

you do not repair it please offer it for sale on SewItsForSale yahoogroup.

I would purchase it. Being an Electronic Engineer, B.S.E.E., I be willing

to bet that I could fix it for just my time.

The 1230 is a wonderful machine and well worth spending the money on the repairs.

as a former bernina tech for almost 20 yrs I would encourage you to have it repaired. It is most likely one of the circuit boards. The 1230 has the reputation of being "one of the Better" older machines.

Wouldn't that require electricity? Interesting.

Yes, I would spend that money, and more if needed. I have an 1130 and I would pay that if necessary. The 1230 is a wonderful machine and a fantastic machine to learn to sew on. If she doesn't use your 1230, then what will it cost to find her a comparable machine???

Compared to the price of a new Bernina, or even a well loved Bernina, $350 is a bargain.

If she outgrows the 1230, she can always buy her own machine, but I bet that the 1230 will be plenty until she knows if she really wants to sew.

Suz, people look for these machines. I've seen -in-search-of- posts for that model on the yahoo group sewitsforsale, & when someone does post one to sell, it usually gets snapped up quickly. So even if your daughter doesn't wind up sewing & you decide to sell it, You can get quite a bit more for it that what those repairs will cost. Connie

I don't know what the 1230 ran new but I know my 1530 was $3200. In 1992, even for a TOL machine, it was a hefty price. Even now it commands a pretty good amt on Ebay for a 20 year old machine.

While the 1230 is unquestionably a fabulous machine, you also have to consider what it is worth repaired (quite a bit) and if you spent that repair money on a new machine would it be as good. The answer to that is "No". (Even if you put that money into a used machine, you would be very lucky to find a machine that good for that price.) Sometimes you have to ask the cost of repair vs the cost of replacement.

But these machines don't often need repairs and since she's the original

owner she knows how it's been treated, something you have no idea about

one from eBay. This model was/is an incredible workhorse and even if she

did the repairs and then decided to sell it she could easily get at

least double if not triple. They go for that much usually and highly

sought after. In our store, when we've had them, a selling price of

$1000-1200 is not uncommon.

I'm not a knowledgeable lady, but I am a Certified Bernina Technician with 30 years of professional electronic servicing before becoming a Bernina tech.

Without actually seeing the machine, I don't know if that's a proper estimate or not, but the machine is definitely worth getting repaired.

Hi, I am a current Bernina tech and must say this is most certainly a great machine. The L-print power board in back needs repaired. I don't know if your talking about a Bernina dealership fixing this or not. And I hate to talk out of school but I think that repair price is high. By the time I took the board out, shipped it to Bernina in Chicago for repair and got it back and put in. The price would be half that. Probably it could stand a tune up at the same time and that might put the price up to closer of what you were quoted. I would be sure they went through it with a complete tune up after the board is reinstalled for that price. Just saying.
