I wonder if anyone has worked very much with 30 wt thread in their machines, either for decorative sewing or embroidery? If so, what adjustments had to be made to the tension?

Many thanks for any feedback

For my 830 artista, no changes to the top thread (kept it at 2.25 for

embroidery, cant remember what the standard tension was for ordinary sewing,

but whatever it was, I didn't touch it), released the bottom tension about

two notches to the left for embroidery, but left it normal for ordinary

sewing. My bernina 930 I made no changes top or bottom, but I did put in a

larger needle (I think a 90/14).

Many thanks for this Susan, it's good to know there's a way around the thicker thread.

Hi Jo,

I use Guetermann Cotton C NE 50, which is a 30 wt cotton thread. This works just fine with a size 80/12 needle on my 830, 440QE and a cheap grocery store Toyota machine. No issues.

Are you observing strange behavior?

I've used 30wt threads in my Berninas, generally with no tension

adjustments. That would be in my machines other than the 830! ;-)

Kari - I successfully used 30 weight thread in the top, with 60 weight

in the bobbin (both cotton both metler), using the blanket stitch on the

8-series with almost no adjustment (when switching to blanket stitch, I

threaded for embroidery and that was the extent of the adjustment). I

did only a limited test and it wasn't for a big project. Next quilt

(after my other niece's project - 2 project down) will extensively use

the blanket stitch, and I will be using it more then. The only 30 weight

thread I will use is the metler cotton, that is it.

What did you use for a needle with your 30 weight thread. I have Sulky and

want to do a quilt of Cindy Losekamps

Many thanks to all who responded to my query regarding using 30 wt thread, I do appreciate it. I have used it a little from time to time but am always a little nervous that I might be straining the upper tension discs etc ............ but apparently it's ok.

Thanks again

I recently quilted a twin sized quilt on my 750QE using 30 wt thread on top and bottom line 60 wt in the bottom with no problems whatsoever. Did the stitch in the ditch with no adjustments but then lowered the upper tension slightly for the FMQ, but I always do that when doing free motion quilting.

Haven't used the embroidery module on my machine at all yet other than in the class to learn how it works so no experience to relate there.

Forgot to mention, I use a 90/14 needle with 30 wt thread. > > I wonder if anyone has worked very much with 30 wt thread in their machines,
