I am thinking about purchasing either a 4 or 5 series Bernina. The 430, 440QEE or the 530? The 580 is beyond what I am looking to spend. I would like a machine that I can take with me to classes and retreats. Would like one that does embroidery as well. The 4 series is an older (I am older, too!) line.

Any input, suggestions, feedback is much appreciated!!

I was sitting next to a woman last week who replaced her older Bernina with the 500 series, not sure which one. If left up to me I would opt for the 500 series. I lot of new specialty stitches and features.

I have a 440QE and love the machine. I. bought it two years ago to replace a. 40 year old Elna. I was not sure if I would enjoy the embroidery unit so I bought the 440QE and thought I would try it. Now, I love embroidery, but using the laptop is not ideal in my opinion. I am having software issues connecting the laptop to the 440QE. I have been told by dealers that the EConPC can have issues depending on the computer and the different operating systems. I am thinking of upgrading to the 580. If I had known two years ago how much I would have enjoyed the embroidery, I would have bought the machine that did not have to be connected to the laptop. It is my belief that the 4 series is not being produced anymore. I would like to hear from people who have the 580 and are they happy with it. I am a little hesitant, because with anything new, kinks often have to be worked out.

Only the 580 has embroidery capabilities.

I wanted a more compact sewing/embroidery combo unit to take to classes and

wound up buying the 430 w/embroidery module. After stitching on the big

830, having to connect the machine to the laptop takes a little getting

used to, but the 580 was just more than I wanted to spend on a machine that

would get minimal use. Am happy with my purchase and would highly

recommend you looking into the 400 series, especially if your intent is to

use the machine for classes and retreats and you're on a budget. You can

get some really good buys on this series now.

If you are a quilter you might consider the 550, it comes with the BSR and the even feed foot. You could get a stand alone Deco 340 for embroidery, that way you could embroider and sew at the same time if desired.

The EconPc on the 440 is a big PITA as far as comparability for the embroidery and I would not recommend it...for just sewing it's great but that's it unless you are a computer guru! I sold mine because I had a new computer and now I own an upgraded 200/730 and I love it. Much easier to do embroidery if I want it, and I took it to retreat with me also. Not much different than packing up a 440. But for a day class I would take my little Janome

Thank you for your replies and input! The 580 is nice but I can't justify spending that amount right now as I also have the 830. I am leaning towards the 4 series even though it is an older line. Going to do some legwork at the dealer! Thank you!

I have just bought a 550qe and I love it I previously had a Nova 900 so its very different ! , I have bought a few extra feet for dressmaking but I wanted to get into quilting so it's perfect for me...! I did buy the Janome 7700- I didn't like it one bit despite the extra space but the dealer let me swap it for the Bernina 550 - once a Bernina Girl always a Bernina Girl I guess!
