First off, thanks again to all for providing help and advice thus far. After this post, I'll be glad to hear of any critiques/other advice that could be passed along.
This loco, by the way, did indeed have a can motor and, with a thin plastic washer and some plastic shims, the motor was indeed isolated from everything else. I did find that with the shimming/washers added, the motor wasn't aligned well with the gearbox.
With that, I decided to construct a new motor mount bracket made from plastic, replacing the metal bracket. The piece is the same dimension as the metal piece, with the added advantage of near perfect motor/gearbox alignment.
I also have completely disconnected the smoke unit, and plan to wire the headlight separately, just to insure an isolated connection.
Anything else that I'm missing?
