From Doug Wagner...
In the 1940.s and 1950.s, some of the hottest freight trainon the Santa Fe Railroad were the GFX (Green Fruit Express) trains, from thefarmlands of Californiato points all over the map. For thosetrains making it all the way to Chicago, distributions were made to all points Midwest. Many entire trains were transferred to theErie RR for Northeast delivery. TheB&O, PRR, and NYC covered D.C., Pennsylvania, and New Yorkrespectively. All types of fruits andveggies grown in the West were on these trains, and time was of theessence. Most cars were filled with iceon both ends of each car to keep everything cool. Ice stops were to be made daily. The traintook 6 days to reach Chicago, reaching its destination on the morning of the sixth day.
The GFX ran from Californiato Kansas City or Chicago.Others stops included Galveston, Dallas, and Houston. These Texastrains ran as CTX or BTX. Cars could be pulled from the GTX at any junctionpoint for delivery to places such as Denver or St. Louis, for example.
And to honor those reefer trains that carried the potatoesfrom Bakersfield to Eastern markets, theconvention car for the Daylight Express is a representation of the reefers thatran endlessly to Chicago.and points east.toprovide California produce to the Eastern United States. The Daylight Express conventioncar will be produced by Accurail.in HO ONLY.and will be a 40-foot steel reefer,in the Santa Fe Grand Canyon paint scheme, for the mid 1950.s era. The carswill be offered in four separate road numbers, so if you order 4 conventioncars, you will receive four reefers with four separate road numbers and eachcar will have a separate build date.
The pricing for the convention cars will be as follows:
. $22 for one.
. $40 for two
. $75 for allfour.
An order less than four, the convention car committee willpick the car number.
