Hi Brenda & Tony,

Up until about the 2nd World War the naming system was

basically as follows, 1st son called after his paternal

g/father, 1st daughter after maternal g/mother, this

was sometimes changed, 1st son after maternal g/father,

1st daughter after paternal g/mother. Normally siblings

after that would be called after father, mother and then

family members from both sides. Like any system it was

not ridgedly followed by all scots families and there

will always be exceptions.

Regards,

Jim

Hello everyone,

Would some kind soul please refresh my memory regarding

the Scottish naming system for families.

That is, who was the first born son usually named after

and so on, and was this system generally adhered to?

Am seeking a family of GEMMELL's with siblings William

& Elizabeth (both born in Paisley) - they probably

others siblings too.

Both named their only sons David.

Would I be correct in assuming that their father's name

was David ?

Thanks for any help, it would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Brenda
