Hi, everyone,

I apologize for this rudimentary question, but I have just recently got my hands on an original "brown" dx7 and a tx802 sound modulator. I can get the dx7 to play voices from its internal cartridge but cannot get it to play any voices from the tx802. Also, all of the internal voices on the dx7 are all gibberish. Here's what I've "accomplished" so far:- connected midi OUT from the tx802 to the midi IN on the dx7.- connected midi IN from the tx802 to the midi OUT on the dx7.- connected a standard amplifier cord from the tx802 'INDIVIUDAL OUTPUT 1' to my keyboard amplifier.- I hit function, then press 8 and it says 'FUNCTION CONTROL MIDI CH=1'- then I press 8 again and it says 'FUNCTION CONTROL SYS INFO AVAIL'- then I press 8 again andit says 'FUNCTION CONTROL MIDI TRANSMIT?'- I press 'yes' and then...NOTHINGWhat am I missing here? Are my cables set up right?Do I need to put the amplifier cable into the dx7 and not the tx802?Do I need to press some settings on the tx802 to send the voices to the dx7?Can I use the tx802 to reprogram the internal voices on the dx7 or do I need to get a midi USB cable and connect to my PC to do this? Please help! Would love to get this rig up and running!Much thanks in advance!Michael

Well, congratuations on your new acquisition.

Lots of good sounds await you.

Internal voices = gibberish is doubtless a bad battery on board...Old brown one has a 25 year old battery in it and it's probablynever been changed... Might wanna look into that.

What you CAN do is load voices from the cart and, as long as it'splugged in, play them from that.

Here's what I've "accomplished" so far:- connected midi OUT from the tx802 to the midi IN onthe dx7.

This accomplishes nothing and simply complicates things... You reallydon't need or want this.

- connected midi IN from the tx802 to the midi OUT onthe dx7.

Ok, no problemo.

- connected a standard amplifier cord from the tx802'INDIVIUDAL OUTPUT 1' to my keyboard amplifier.- I hit function, then press 8 and it says 'FUNCTIONCONTROL MIDI CH=1'- then I press 8 again and it says 'FUNCTION CONTROLSYS INFO AVAIL'- then I press 8 again and it says 'FUNCTION CONTROLMIDI TRANSMIT?'- I press 'yes' and then...NOTHING

Mehhh... I dunno about any of this... It oughta just work right offwithout any button pushing... The default program is just a simplesinewave sounding thing, but it oughta make noise.

Oldschool DX7s were midi channel 1 only... They were the big duck ofthe time and they didn't care who else wanted to play... TX802 willhandle about anything, midi-wise.

What am I missing here?..Are my cables set up right?Do I need to put the amplifier cable into the dx7 andnot the tx802?

You actually need an amp cable into BOTH, if you wanna hear both....which you do.

In this case, the ONLY thing the midi cable will carry is yourhand-work (keys, wheels, and program change)... Midi doesn't carrysound.

Do I need to press some settings on the tx802 to sendthe voices to the dx7?

They're incompatible... Not the same parameters... Actually, the TX802will often read DX7 (by using a computer based editor) but not theother way round... The TX802 has several more parameters than the DXand stores them differently... I've been looking for a translationprogram for years and haven't found one.

Can I use the tx802 to reprogram the internal voiceson the dx7 or do I need to get a midi USB cable andconnect to my PC to do this?

Both synths will program from their own front panels, if you're soinclined (ugh)... If you get midi into a computer, you still need aneditor/librarian program... PC or Mac, though I think Mac did abetter job with this vintage than PC ever did.

Also remember, there are MOUNTAINS of patches for these things...Chances are, it's been programmed long, long ago... You coulddownload tremendous resources (or buy them for less than $10 offebay) and have more patches than you could audition in YEARS.

Absolutely any computer will work... Actually, the older the betterbecause you could get one really cheap and use it just for this.

Hope that helps.

good luck.

I have two DX7s and a TX7 which is a DX in a tabletop package... Ihave a TX816 which is eight DXs in a rack... I also have two TX802sthat I run together in even/odd mode (you'll learn about that)...This stuff ain't really rocket science, once you get the hang of it.

L.
